Senate debates STOCK Act, dodges real issue of money in politics
by Donny Shaw February 1, 2012 http://www.opencongress.org/
“The undue influence of corporate money in public policy is at the root of nearly all the major problems facing the U.S. right now, and in the wake of the Citizens United decision it's only going to get worse.
That's why it was good to hear President Obama call out the "corrosive influence of money in politics" during his State of the Union speech.
Unfortunately, his primary call to action doesn't even address the real issue.
“Send me a bill that bans insider trading by members of Congress,” Obama said. “I will sign it tomorrow.”
The Senate has already responded to the request by voting 93-2 to begin debate of the STOCK Act, which would ban Congress from trading for personal benefit based on nonpublic information derived from their official positions.
As a recent 60 Minutes episode made clear, insider trading by Congress is a real problem that should be corrected. Members of Congress should never be given special exemptions from the laws they enact on everyone else. But it has almost nothing to do with how money distorts the political process and prevents Congress from doing its job and serving the public interest.
The corrosive influence of money in politics is rooted in the disproportionate level of political campaign contributions and lobbying expenditures from private interests, the revolving door that lets D.C. elites build up their personal worth by blurring the line between public and private work, and the secretive corporate takeover of elections.
These things have made the U.S. Congress a systemically corrupt institution, where bribery is the norm (and perfectly legal) and a pro-corporate bias is ubiquitous.
We need systemic fixes to root out the corrosive influence of money in politics.
Instead, Obama and Congress are looking at cosmetic fixes to symbolic cases of individual corruption that are both rare and relatively inconsequential.”

FROM WIKIPEDIA.COM ......
A corporation is created under the laws of a state as a separate legal entity that has privileges and liabilities that are distinct from those of its members. There are many different forms of corporations, most of which are used to conduct business.
Early corporations were established by charter (i.e. by an ad hoc act passed by a parliament or legislature). Most jurisdictions now allow the creation of new corporations through registration.
An important (but not universal) contemporary feature of a corporation is limited liability. If a corporation fails, shareholders may lose their investments, and employees may lose their jobs, but neither will be liable for debts to the corporation’s creditors.
Despite not being natural persons, corporations are recognized by the law to have rights and responsibilities like natural persons (“people”).
Corporations can exercise human rights against real individuals and the state, and they can themselves be responsible for human rights violations. Corporations are conceptually immortal but they can “die” when they are “dissolved” either by statutory operation, order of court, or voluntary action on the part of shareholders.
Insolvency may result in a form of corporate ‘death’, when creditors force the liquidation and dissolution of the corporation under court order, but it most often results in a restructuring of corporate holdings.
Corporations can even be convicted of criminal offenses, such as fraud and manslaughter. However corporations are not living entities in the way that humans are.

RECEIVED IN AN EMAIL:
1. Buy Jeffrey Clements' outstanding new book, "Corporations Are Not People: Why They Have More Rights Than You Do and What You Can Do About It."
The book's ultimate goal is to give every citizen the tools and talking points to overturn corporate personhood state by state, community by community with petitions, house party kits, draft letters, shareholder resolutions, and much more.
And the book includes the real solution: a Constitutional Amendment which would reverse Citizens United.
Let's make this urgent book #1 on Amazon Politics and send a powerful message to the media about how strongly we feel.
2. Support the first Constitutional Amendment with broad support in the Senate, S.J.Res.29 - proposing an Amendment to the Constitution of the United States relating to contributions and expenditures intended to affect elections.

|You are preaching to the choir, brother!!!Unfortunately the choir doesn't include anybody who can do something about the mess. We all know who owns them!
Aside from some of the things you suggest, I would make lobbying illegal by corporations, groups and surrogates. Individuals can still lobby, but only if they are speaking for themselves, and there is no remuneration, explicit or implicit. Congressmen would have to do their own homework.
What to do with the lobbyists and corpoprate executives who are put our of work by corporate/lobby reform? Well, illegal immigration should also be curtailed. In that case the country will need lots of landscapers, pool cleaners, farm workers and meat processing plant workers and all. I can't think of any better jobs for disgraced lobbyists and corporate titans. Welcome to "How the other half lives."

|Hold On There, Fella. The top ranking Millionaire's Club Presidential Candidate Midas Romney says: “Corporations are Indeed, People!” He wouldn’t lie to us, would he? He also recently declared: “I don’t worry about poor people!” So, following his logic, super rich corporations have absolutely nothing to worry about if he becomes our next President, but all other people will be in deep doo doo. (Must be a lot of super rich folks in Florida; they obviously love the guy.)
PS: He doesn’t worry about animal abuse either. The vast majority of canines are now against Romney ever since that story came out recently that he used to make his poor old dog Seamus ride up on the roof of the Midas Mobile on family vacations. (God forbid Seamus tracked some mud or dirt into his car.) But alas, dogs aren’t people like corporations are, and they can’t vote.
