Uncle Albert, Poetized

A number of years have gone by,
Since someone with whom I
Have become acquainted,
Wrote this prose. Untainted
By changes or rescissions,
It is “poetized” with incisions
To lines where phrases fall.
Please enjoy, Denizens, et. al.

The most beautiful experience

we can have is the mysterious.

It is the fundamental emotion

which stands at the cradle

of true art and true science.

Whoever does not know it

and can no longer wonder,

no longer marvel,

is as good as dead,

and his eyes are dimmed.

It was the experience of mystery

—even if mixed with fear—

that engendered religion.

A knowledge of the existence

of something we cannot penetrate,

our perceptions of the profoundest reason

and the most radiant beauty,

which only in their most primitive forms

are accessible to our minds

—it is this knowledge and this emotion

that constitute true religiosity;

in this sense, and in this alone,

I am a deeply religious man.

I cannot conceive of a God who

rewards and punishes his creatures,

or has a will of the kind that

we experience in ourselves.

Neither can I nor would I want

to conceive of an individual

that survives his physical death;

let feeble souls,

from fear or absurd egoism,

cherish such thoughts.

I am satisfied with the mystery

of the eternity of life

and with the awareness

and a glimpse of the marvelous

structure of the existing world,

together with the devoted striving

to comprehend a portion,

be it ever so tiny,

of the Reason

that manifests itself

 in nature.

Man will never know God but through faith. Some have it, some don't. Maybe Uncle Albert now does know something.

Sometimes it's hard for me to accept a God who allows some of the pain and suffering that goes on in the world, but He does have everything under control. A good piece of writing

I enjoyed this and your views on the subject and I'm so glad we can all voice our opinions, allowing everyone to choose, without coercion, whichever suits their ideology best, without being called names! Thank you Leland!

Leland.. this is a subject that never grows old, never is solved, always remains open to thought and speculation.. I, too, love that you have brought us Einstein, the man.. the poor thing must have grown weary of that "genius" label. Where once you confused but intrigued (even) me with math, you now make me feel smarter.. you challenge me.. and you temper it all with such kindness and such a genially outstretched hand to learn WITH, not just FROM you. I'm the 'hard nut' and you've cracked me! Thank you. katy xox.

Leland, As Matt has proclaimed and I agree, this brief essay by Einstein is not poetry. However, I have not read it before and thank you for bringing it to us. As usual, your poetic license at the foreword is precious.

Leland,

Thank you for poetizing a concept we all struggle with, from the words of one of the greatest minds of our time.

Trying to find God in a scripture is time wasted. As you said, God is Nature (I believe from the Pantheist Movement). If God were to write a book for man to use I think he would take better care of it. And he would make it known...this is the book by which we should govern ourselves by. He or she would not expect us to assume on faith alone.

Yes, I do agree with this basic concept of his, I do however believe that religion is a useful tool in the hands of those who want true peace on earth, goodwill to all, etc. Religion, however, can be a brutal taskmaster, this latest fanatical (some say fanatical, I say more mainstream) Moslem terrorist. Good post, Leland.
