Today, 12/10/2013, I was inspired to write this poem by our President’s speech
at the Memorial Services of President Nelson Mandela.
Without doubt, President Obama is the greatest speaker of our times.

The Immigrants

“The Immigrants are the ones who should work!”

Said the young punk living next door

With a snarl on his face

I was cutting my grass

Sweating, tired

After nine hours of work at the office

He was petting his dog

Living off his girlfriend’s

 And her children’s State allowances.

“Indeed, the Immigrants should work”,

I reflected bitterly,

“They are the new slaves of America

Arrived here on a Dream,

Of a better life, of Freedom”

How many injustices,

How many humiliations

We have to endure

In the pursuit of our Dream!

I agree with Ron. If you don't work, you don't eat. Well said!

All but the Native Americans were once immigrants. There are bad apples in every barrel along with the good ones.

In my first college speech class, I was taught not to say, "Ahh…" while thinking about what to say next. I was told that it was okay to pause during speech but not to say anything until I had formed my words carefully. I really wish that President Obama at had my class at Harvard. Aside from that, Obama is more careful in his speech than I, and while giving a formal speech is a brilliant speechwriter (although all presidents have speechwriters) in his own right.

I was born in this country and cut my own grass, trimmed my own nails and toe nails, and generally, did without "slave labor" except while in a restaurant where I tipped generously and at the barbershop where I did likewise until I had to hire help--both immigrants and those with caregiver mentalities.

As Ed has so eloquently stated, each new wave of immigrants was despised and treated badly by people who were also immigrants before, and served to work in the lowest paying and most dangerous of occupations, building the country into what it was and what it will continue to be, as long as we freely admit those who are willing to work hard and succeed.

Unfortunately, so many in our country feel that selfishness is their privilege and birthright, and cannot see any value in hard work and trying to be successful at all. That thinking will be our downfall.

I certainly agree that Obama is the most gifted speaker of our times. But you have given us many good reasons to think about our roots, our heritage, and who really made this country what it is--the immigrants! Well said.

Beside Still Waters by Jill Eisnaugle

Each person is but a grain of sand resting beside the sea. This thought sets the tone for Jill Eisnaugle’s latest poetry collection, Beside Still Waters.
