Fretting about my getting something from a cigarette
Some sundry horror known or unknown like some I have met
I do not think I have it now though I may get it yet

One uncareful scaring careful one not unaware of
Regretful dangers fretful strangers live or die for love
Persisting to exist insisting who resist to be

Trying to find meaning here within the in-betweening
Of life under the threat of death to wonder about breath
Out and in a doubting heart deciding there not to care

When life is still forgiving I will take my chance living
Giving out before I give in living up and down then
To whatever I thought I was taught to but never knew

Caring not caring nothing scaring baring everything
If also fretting daring getting something like I do
The universe is singing to me yet I get gloomy

Would I could listen I should hear it sing reality
Release myself from fear to just be here at must be now
Sharing the moment with a flaring cigarette somehow

But then again some horrors may remain unknown unmet
When I would get all I could then before the either/or
I do not think I have it now though I may get it yet

43 Haiku and 4 poems of a Wayward Sailor by Mike Walling

Haiku of a Wayward Sailor” encompasses both haiku and poems. Many of the haiku are based on my experiences at sea.
