for Patricia Lance
Once she was the reasonable one
I the unreasonable son
But dying my mother said
There were monkeys in the trees
And there was a baby in the bed
Not knowing what to think of these
Things my mother had said
I chose not to think instead
But see her whatever she saw
I told her though I was the baby
And she said maybe so maybe
Before we said au revoir
Forever to see her be though dead
To live through me who live to be
In memory of her
Or maybe there was a baby
For all I know and those monkeys were
If only in her head
But see her whatever she saw
Au revoir: in memory of her
