I

It was so awful it ought to be unlawful
But where I was because I had no other place to be
So there I was grateful though the people were hateful
But they hated all alike because they hated them not me

Gratefully lately I got out of an awful
And hateful then somehow with my plate full now of poetry

II

A wild jackrabbit with a cottonball tail
Hops about before me out behind the rail
Of the fence as I can see how its defense
Against bigger beings and now seeing me
Is (like Bugs Bunny) its elusivity

III

Shadows of clouds pass over the hill
Shadows always pass I know they do
When they come and then they go I know
Shadows were and are as shadows will
Always be because they come to go

Written in shadow seeing a name
To recognize does not surprise who
Was will be because he came to go
Seeing him being a shadow too
Steven though gone goes on even so

IV

M-a-r-i-s-o-l
Is the dog to give 'em hell
Should hell need giving she could give it good

Marisol is big and tough
Not too smart but smart enough
That when she licks me I feel understood

V

When we are dead and gone then are we gone?
Some of us live by love whose love lives on
This is what I say anyway that I
Am not afraid to live by love and die
But not be gone then when my love lives on
