I heard more noises from the basement last night
The phantom bumps and creaks of this old house
They still scare me after all these years of living alone
Afraid to open the door to check them out
Fear that ruffles up your spine, freezing you in one spot
Your mind demanding your legs to move
Eyes searching the room for something to protect yourself with
I grab a broom…. a laughable weapon
What damage could I possibly do with this?
I summon the courage to look outside
The night is so dark with deep shadows
I turn every light on in the house
Like that would dispel any hidden demons
I know there is something in the basement
The cats tell me my ears aren’t lying
Or are they just reacting to my fear
They stick close to me while I go from room to room
Ears pricked upright, nervous twitching under skin
My stomach churns with anticipation of unwanted surprise
Can they hear me pacing the length of the house?
These disembodied entities of my imagination
My mouth goes dry and a chill runs through me
As I hear another sound rising from the depths
Should I call the police and risk looking stupid?
That thought drags at me, should I or shouldn’t I call
I’m wishing I had a gun about now
But I’d probably just shoot off my own foot
These are the times I long to have a man here
My knight…for my nights alone
Someone to take charge of the situation
To alleviate all my fears
Someone to assure me that I’m safe in my own home
Strong arms to hold me as I shake in my boots
My fear has drained my energy
Sleep is trying to take over
The sounds from below subside for the time being
Enough to let me relax and let sleep surround me
The shadows of fear pushed aside for a while
Hopefully by the light of day all will be well…
Boy can I identify. I deliberately bought a home with no basement for this very reason... no kidding. But I still go around with silly weapons like brooms when things go bump in the night! Nice piece.

Very scary... and I think we all can relate to that feeling of naked fear at one time in our lives. Very well written.

Scary, this brought back memories, spent my childhood in an old house like this, can still feel the creepy chills when I think about it and in reading your poem. Great work.

Sounds like a scene from a horror movie! The creaking never helps, especially late at night. Creepy write!
