Help Me Understand

The older I get the less I know

What life really means

The only thing I’m sure of

Nothing’s ever what it seems.

There seems no rhyme or reason

To the actions people take

They seem so willy-nilly

Often leaving disaster in their wake.

They give up true love

To satisfy their worldly needs

Like a gardener ripping our the flowers

To cultivate the weeds.

Their children are sacrificed

To their lust for gold

Then the wonder why their kids

Ignore them when they’re old.

Their real friends they drop

Replaced by richer folk

Then one day they realized

Social climbing is a uneven yoke.

They let their spirits die

In their search for worldly gain

Never ever thinking

That to do so is really quite insane.

I wonder when they’ll wake up

Or if they’ll ever see

They’re supposed to be a soul in search of being

What God meant them to be.

I agree with everyone here Bobbi. As for the answer tho, it is a very simple one. Live in the shadow of God almighty, and trust in our Lord Jesus. It is such a shame that people want more, more, more, and yet call themselves good Christians, simply because they go to church on Sunday.

The title of this poem, Help Me Understand, is what I have been saying for over 40 years. Help Me Understand Why? I have asked this question forever it seems, and here and elsewhere online I have gotten positive responses. I wouldlike to have enough money to have what I need completed. But, if I don't get it, and I cannot be complete in body and soul, then at least I will have lived as me, and not some pretended person, society wants me to be.

It is the same with the poem, Bobbi.

There seems no rhyme or reason
To the actions people take
They seem so willy-nilly
Often leaving disaster in their wake.

This verse is so true, and is the key to the entire peom, in this little girl's humble opinion. There is no rhyme or reason for the actions of most of society, when they are succumbed by greed, hatred and indifference.

Maybe, just maybe, society as a whole will learn to accept things in their natural course, instead of forcing them, just so they can make more money, and have influential friends. Thnx for sharing sis.

May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie

"If I have to be this girl in me, Then I have the right to be."

powerful piece, Bobbi ... one can only wake up when ready ... i usually don't quote from the bible but this analogy seems to work: "all those who say lord, lord, shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven"

Bobbi...a timely plea and a sad commentary on our society. I have no answers either, except to say humans haven't changed one bit over the centuries. The same emotions and motivations rule now as they always did.

A well expressed lament, coming from a caring heart!

This poem strikes every emotional center and hit the heart of the soul, except in the last two lines. "Help Me Understand" could bring a stronger impact for spiritual revival if the last strophe would be revised -- at least the last line -- and something more symbolistical be used to replace it.

This composition is beautiful as it is now... It is nourishment for the humanity of the mind and energy for the eternity of the soul.

The material world has chewed up the masses. I am an easy keeper and live very simple. I buy all second hand clothes. My advice is to treat people as if they were what they ought to be and help them to become what they are capable of being. Affirm, believe, and choose, break loose from negative forces that imprison, put a fresh carnation in your lapel each day and face the world with confidence! A lot of good thoughts here, Bobbi.

Greed has ruined this world. Now the media says the ozone is causing premature births. When will the world learn from mistakes? When will harmony reign with nature and man?

I can hear the silent voices screaming. It can't go on much longer. We all are paying a huge price but mostly our children and grandchildtren will suffer.

A powerful, dramatic write and a lot of truth in those smoothly flowing words. Sadly, we can't help you to understand either. Loved it,
