Who could have known just ten years back
A gangly pup with no place to go
We took a chance and brought him home
With no idea how tall he’d grow
He had a shiny coat as black as coal
Big brown eyes that twinkled bright
A sneaky smile that made me mad
When caught with trash bags in the night
He stole my socks and gnawed them through
Huge mounds of fur this dog did shed
He hogged the covers and pinned my knees
His sprawling hulk took half the bed
Ever polite he’d wait his turn
When someone offered a doggie treat
He could hear the fridge open a mile away
When I scrounged around for a bite to eat
He’d present his paw in search of pets
And lay his head upon my lap
And scratch about on his doggie bed
Before circling around to take a nap
The evenings are very quiet now
I catch myself looking out the door
Wondering when he’ll come bounding in
And groan as he flops himself on the floor
The hurt is less as each day passes
A true r friend I will never meet
I’ll rescue again when the time is right
Oh God, how I miss my grand old Pete

Years ago I had a German Shephard, his name was Bismark and I used to think we could read each others thoughts. He was a wonderful, gentle, giant and I worshipped him and took him everywhere. When the children began to come along he was right there as a protector. He layed by the carriage, slept by the nursery door, investigated anyone who came near. Nearly took up the whole bed and loved to lay on the sofa to have his belly rubbed. I always saw him as a gift from God. When he died I swore I would never have a dog again. He died in 1983 just before my youngest son was born. Two years ago (April, 2008) we opened our hearts and home to two beautiful little 5 1/2 week old female pups that now go everywhere and do everything with us,but it took all these years for me. I feel for you and understand. Pete was a magnificent member of your family and filled your heart with love and many memories, now he watches over you from heaven above...
Be always safe,
Karen
