My sweet 5 year old niece Ava sent this to me last week. Not looking for sympathy here, Pete’s in a better place and so am I now. Some things just need to be shared

For Ava

Mr. Postman dropped this by

When I opened it

It made me cry

Not because I miss my friend

Of course I really do

Now my heart is on the mend

Thanks in part to you

Petey’s with the angels now

Your picture makes it clear

But what your drawing really shows

There’s an angel living here

The angel’s name is Ava

My tears were those of joy

You took the time to share your heart

In remembering my dear sweet boy

Aw!!! How delightful this is, Patrick. I'm so very sorry for your loss. The wonder of a grandchild's love can sure fill in deep holes in your heart can't it? I truly loved this little tale...Your lyrical verse is completely adorable!

This is wonderful. Amazing the sensitivity of children. Little magicians they are. Well done Patrick.

Good to see you writing again, my friend, though, obviously, your heart is still broken over the death of Pete, as I know mine would be also. I do look forward to seeing you at the book fair. Although my booth time is at 1:00 I will be there at least an hour earlier. And who knows, maybe we'll finally be able to stop on the way home for those Vienna, Chicago style hot dogs.

There's a lot of love packed into that little page Ava made for you.
When my dog Corky died, my little granddaughter also drew me a picture, so I could look at Corky anytime. Young ones are so capable of caring, so sweetly compassionate. Thank you for sharing the beauty of this poem.

There are indeed angels, Patrick; and this is a fine and merited tribute to your little niece. Love and peace,

Angels work in misterious ways don't they. Bless you! Jasmin Horst
