Blinding light penetrates your every thought
Continues on through the time pitted glass
Into the depths of the night’s dark abyss
Powerful lens in constant rotation
Radiating
Warning
Seeking
Slow motion strobe turns every vision pure brilliant white
Until the red dark black circular room returns
For a brief moment
Reality check
Ablaze again the mind races with perspective
Slowed only by the curved perception
Of the backside of a light beam
The finish line lying at the bottom of a steep spiral
A dizzying trail of stony stairs that corkscrew down
To the rusted doors that seem to lock you in
For even when thrown wide open
Your light blasting away at the shadows
Reveals only emptiness
As your mental radar probes the horizon
Seeking a reflection
Proof that you are not alone
Fearing the day the arc burns itself out
And the keeper no longer returns to replenish
The tiny carbon stick that gives you life
For only in that darkness can you see
The other light houses
Dotting the treacherous coastline
Of your small world
And that really scares you

Here's what I think. Intellectualism does not force one on an island, but forcefully connects one to the world. I think it does force one to see the too-many connections and that some can lead to good while others lead to ill, and I believe that intellectuality is a gift of sight and this sight is sometimes painful. It must have been an intellectual who coined the phrase "ignorance is bliss"!
You are so diverse, so brilliantly eclectic as a poet, St. Patrick!
