I live in the state of Florida and a recent survey proved what I've suspected all along. Florida is Number One in the United States at having the Worst Drivers.
THE AMAZING TURN SIGNAL
In this modern day and time,
every car is equipped with this invention.
It lets those behind you
know of your intention.
Look to the left of the stirring column.
You’re sure to easily find it.
It may be small but it’s not hidden
Push it up and down, try it out for a bit.
It won’t hurt you I promise.
Down means left, up means right.
Drivers behind you will see the result
and be pleased with such a wonderful sight.
Avoid the cost of car repair
by using this easy to find lever.
Other drivers on the roads will be amazed
and know that you are ever so clever.

Your lesson poem is most telling. I recall we were taught to use hand signals for turns in high school driver's education. Can you imagine rolling the window down at 20 below zero and sticking your arm out to make a turn? We did it.
Florida has an inordinate amount of elderly people. Most of the elderly continue to drive until they become a hazard. My mother had an accident after over 30 years of accident free driving. And then, she was stopped on a highway for driving too slow. Finally, she left the door open on her car while backing out of the garage, catching it, and realized she needed to stop driving.
Many older people have hearing problems like me and find they leave the signal light on like my father often did. Since my hands are paralyzed and in the tri-pins for gas and brake on the left hand and steering on the right, I cannot operate turn signals except with my voice. Above 40 mph, road noise makes my voice system fail to understand my commands for, "right," or, "left." So, I have to carefully and gradually change lanes and be sure to be in the right lane for making turns. I get honked at a lot by very fast and inpatient drivers, but I don't post any hazard because it is up to the driver behind to have control of their vehicle and not run into the vehicle in front of them. It's a rule of the road.
Yep, my exact feelings also, Donna. You must be wary of drivers at all times. I live in south Louisiana, and I feel that we share "having the Worst Drivers" distinction.
