When a child learns to walk
it's baby steps at first
gingerly placing one foot in front of the other
excitedly....and then comes the "plop"
When we first come to Christ
we walk slowly at first
watching our every step, thought and action
excitedly.....then we stumble and fall!
When a baby sits wailing upon the floor
Mom or Dad rush to the aide
of their precious offspring
picking up and putting back on two feet
When we have stumbled and fallen
The Father rushes to our side
of his precious child
holding out his loving hands, placing us upright again!
When a baby becomes the accomplished toddler
the exploring days begin
starts zooming about the place
and invairably ends up in strife
When we think we know the Father
we venture way to far
running ahead of him
out comes the shepherd's crook, " Oik"
When a child is half grown
confident of fending for itself
becomes somewhat complacent
shunned parental guidance results in "grounding"
When we leave the Father's side
lean on our own understanding
exploring dangerous portals
comes then gentle but firm reproof
When a teen knows it all
starts telling parents what life is about
leaves home to live a better life
finds two problems left, accrue ten more unknown
When we shun the Father's love
say he cares nothing for us at all
or HE would not of let that happen
sometimes HE lets us wallow...for a time
When a young Adult wakes up
to his miserable lonely life
comes to bang upon the door
nearly tripping over the welcome mat
When we've wandered far away
squandered, played dare devil long enough
all we thought was good is gone
we turn, cry to our Father...His arms are open wide.
So why do we go back to baby steps
to toddlers, young teens, smarty pants young adults
when our mature years are upon us
why do it all again?
Didn't we graze our knees enough?
He is all forgiving
patient and longsuffering
but he won't be trifled with
forever, so take heed
learn from the baby steps
he picked you up back then
protected and set you upright
chastized and welcomed you home

Has the feel of the Return of the Prodigal Son about it...
When we think we know it all, that's when we are in real trouble...
