ODE TO NEIGHBORS

© - Tom Hyland - 6/10/12

Well, his Real name is Adam Jackson Black,
That’s the Truth - Matter of Fact!
And Friends and Family call him ‘Skip’ -
He was always Quick - and Could be ‘Flip’!

T’was Back in ’79 when we Built our House -
Smack Dab in the Middle of a ‘Cul de Sac’
Moved in May ‘80, when Construction was Done -
Lots went Wrong - T’weren’t No Fun!

On our Right, was Rich & Melissa Anderson n’ Kids -
On the Left, Skip n’ Melanie Black, Plus Three!
These Guys was the Bestest Neighbors You Could Ever Have -
Always Helpin’ Out - Afore I Even Asked - You’ll See!

The Hole was Dug - Block Stacked for Foundation -
Rained like Hell - Out in Carroll County -
The Street, Dewberry Circle - Came Downhill to 3601 -
Lil Jimmy A, wanted to Have Some Fun!

Down the Hill - like a ‘Bat Out of Hell’ -
He Peddled his Bike - Goin’ Swell!
Jumped a Puddle - Then ‘Kerplunk’!
CRASH LANDING! Was he Dead as a SKUNK?

Nah! Luckily - Just a Broken Arm!
Lord Protected Him - From Deadly Harm!
If’n his Head had Hit the ‘Block’
T’would-a been One Less ‘In the Flock’!

Then, in May, when the Rain finally Stopped -
T’was Ann’s First Communion Day -
I tried Turnin’ the Ole Dodge Dart Around -
But ... Got Stuck! Felt like a Damn Dumb Clown!

Ole ‘Skip’ then Did Save the Day -
Lent me his Lincoln Continental to Drive to Church!
Syl, Ann, Tom, Me n’ my Parents All got In -
Shot over to Sacred Heart of Glyndon!

When We Came Back Home -
There They All Was - Pushin’ n’ Shovin’ -
Got the Dart Out’ta the Rut -
All Covered in Mud - They Was a Sight!

Another Year, in October, I Think -
Big Snow Storm had our Street Impacted -
We were All Boxed In - ‘Skip’s Red Truck -
Got Half-Way Uphill - then STUCK!

Three Days Later, a Farmer, with his Tractor -
Plowed a Path to Set Us Free -
But, We all had Fun - Congregatin’ -
Snowballs, Snowmen, Sleigh-Ridin’ - to Hell with Satan!

We Took Turns, Havin’ Parties -
This House - That House - Kids Eatin’ ‘Smarties’ ...
Dogs n’ Burgers on the Grill -
We All Had Fun - ‘Til We Had our Fill!

We All had Fireplaces - in Each Home -
Kept us Warm - n’ then Some!
Two-Point Somethin’ Acres - Is What we Had -
My Lil Red Mower was Really Bad!

Ole Richard Used to Laugh n’ Say -
“Yer Under That ‘Sucker’ Most of the Day!”
Cussin’ n’ Fussin’ - I Hated that ‘BEE-UTCH’ -
Should’a BURIED It - in a Ditch!

Times When the ‘Lectricity was Out -
No Problemo! Rich n’ Melissa had Propane Gas -
T’was used for Cookin’ - No Less -
We All Piled Over Their House!

Many a Night, We Adult Folks Did Gather -
Over at Skip’s to Drink Cold Beer’s Lather!
Skip Would Come Down from the Kitchen -
Bread n Bowls in Hand - n’ the Dunkin’ was Grand!

Sliced Italian Bread, Dipped in Virgin Olive Oil -
With Dried Hot Peppers - Floatin’ -
Rich n’ Skip n’ I were Really Gloatin’ like Gluttons!
Hot Peppers Too - We Did Munch n’ Crunch!

Washed Down With Cold Brew - T’was Really Fine -
N’ that’s the Way, We Three Would Dine!
Tellin’ Stories n’ Dirty Jokes -
That Was Us - We Men Folks!

Aah - The Years Have Flown Quickly By -
I Write These Words, With a Tender Sigh ...
AJ, Tracy, n’ Lil Bo - Ann n’ Tom,
Melissa Jr., Richie, Jimmy n’ Christine ...

All Our Kids Got Along - Like They Was Cousins -
‘Ceptin’ When Squabbles Broke Out -
Like ‘The Dirty Dozen’ ...
Feudin’ n’ A-Fussin’ - n’ Jus’ a Little Cussin’!

Those Were The Days - My Friends!
N’ I Shall Never Forget -
Good Comraderie - Great NEIGHBORS!
Ever Need Help? NO SWEAT!

Grand, TK just grand. I have so many memories from that time that you bought back a heart-ache to relive them. Thanks for the tremendous share,

It was a beaut. Especially since I had a Dodge Dart and lawnmowers spent many days under. Imagine what it would be worth today?

There are still places like that, though very few...the campground here all pitched in to help me when I was sick back in '09, then last fall when I was low on food, the summer folks that were going home anyway & didn't want to lug their food all the way home, gave it to me...I ate high off the proverbial hog all winter long...and when the propane was low donations got me some for heat...some neighborhoods can be great while others...............................e

My neighborhood here in LA used to be like that. Then over the years folks moved on and new ones moved in but they don't get along like the old days. Too bad. Patrick
