Tedious Utopia

A philosophical write that ponders the question "Is perfection good for us?" Perhaps heaven can only be reached when you've been through hell.

Poem Artwork

Long ago and faraway
where all good tales began
in a land of plenty
not marred by thinking man
No poverty or sickness,
no anger, greed or hate
Time was not the master
and folk were never late
Utopian land of dreams
Heavenly place to some
To one man it seemed tedious
“A paradise for the dumb.”
“Not for those who question
or rise to seize the day,
No challenges to stretch their minds”
was what he’d like to say.
Others seemed content
in the endless glow of sun
but the wise man prayed most earnestly
that it would come undone
He grew tired of endless day
and longed for the contrast of night
because ‘Only after darkness
can they hope to see the light.’
He looked upon the people
grown complacent, soft and fat
 “Nothing more and nothing less.
What’s a ball without a bat?”
There’s no competition
When everyone agrees
Surrounded by perfection
what could they hope to see?
A better world is found
in balanced black and white
Growth can only happen
through challenges in life.
Hearts and minds grow stronger
when they bravely bear the load
How can one develop
with only one choice of road?"

Yes, I agree! Tedious Utopias are all around which is the best part about differences, liked this.

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent, Chanti. It is through difficulty that we learn and grow. Perfection would be like water standing too long, it would become stagnant and all life within it would cease to exist.
Take care,
Sherry

So true and it provokes the mind.
One must first understand sorrow
to understand joy. ;) I think.

One is not measured by the paths available to choose...
One is only measured by the paths one chooses.

What diatribe is this; and why pray tell the fuss?
We know that Fate is in control...
When at last the path... it chooses us. -- Jeff

Now this is the writtings of a 'thinker'. Someone brave enough to look beyond the veil of ig-norance and consider the wisest ideas as the simplest of schemes. I think to call it a parable but the thought of the poets poem is self-explanatory on its own. I really enjoyed this. Please keep challenging that talented mind of yours and stir those of us who sometimes finds our selves in complacement. My best to you always.

I agree that perfection can only be understood and appreciated when contrasted with the depths of hell. If we only had one beautiful path stretching out ahead of us, I doubt we'd enjoy it or receive it as a blessing. It would be status quo, ho-hum, yawn...But when we've been through the fire, only then can we know what a relief, what a joy, what an amazing gift that beauty can be. This is a wonderfully well crafted poem, and I love the title too. Well put! Love, Michelle

Oh, no, dear Chanti, perfection is the absolute worst thing that can happen. We need bumps in the road and warts on the soul in order to fight the fight for betterment. I firmly believe that we see people who live perfect lives going out of their way to shock and scandalize for no other reason than to say,, "Hey! Look at me. I have problems . . . just . . . like . . . you!" Paris Hilton comes to mind. There are more. Good, as you said, philosophical poetry.

You write with a profound intensity from the bottom of your heart, a heart that has experienced what it narrates, this is the best and most sincere kind of verse that transcends all doubt and duplicity !
Through raw and unshackled experience we learn to carry our cross in life with dignity and grace...

This is a poem that truly bears reading over and over. As I once jokingly referred to the idea of heaven as presented in religion what fun would I have there if there are no bad girls to play with. Anyway this is truly a great piece and would be wonderful for a pshyce class to ponder. Nice to have you back again.
