The Fragility of Bliss
By John Herlihy

I will now hold up for inspection the fragility of bliss,
That shines forth in every direction with nothing amiss.
Gleams of crystal glass reflect multiple shards of light,
An explosion of the lotus, soaring from a nexus bright.

A few moments of bliss with no perceptible cause,
An enchantment so starling that it gives full pause.
Unfounded joy that seems to cast an eternal spell,
Its velvet robes smelt of paradise, all will be well.

A moment to capture eternity in one brief second,
Infinity understood in ways never before reckoned.
The sum of earthly bliss now captured in a thimble,
The moment will not last and will leave me humble.

If the peace of contentment is the greatest wealth,
And the greatest earthly gift the blessing of health.
Buddha said a trusted friend is the greatest relative,
The experience of bliss recreates our origin primitive.

The fragility of bliss from the furnace of heaven fired,
To blow away as mere dandelion seeds newly expired.
Born of an impulse dreamed of but never truly expected,
Vanish like the glitter of fireworks from heaven rejected.

The fragility of bliss its promise fulfills when it releases,
All the paradisal ecstasy of life into a thousand pieces.
Humanity builds an edifice of happiness from hope born,
To linger a while before being from the human heart torn.

The fragility of bliss born in a second to be lost in the hour,
A wave of enlightenment that brings sudden joy and power.
Down here on earth we savor a brief taste of eternity’s bliss,
The sum of earthly delights will be greeted by heaven’s kiss.

AMEN AND HALLELUJAH! I HAVE HELD MY CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN CLOSE AND FELT THE BLISS OF THIS WARM UNION, WHICH SURGES THROUGH ME...BUT I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE HEIGHTENED, ETERNAL BLISS WHICH WILL BE FELT WHEN I AM HELD AND WELCOMED BY THE KING OF KINGS...AND TO BE IN HIS PRESENCE...FOREVER. A FINE WORK, MY FRIEND, SO ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

here, I love the image of the lotus flower, which looks like a hologram to me, quite transparent and therefore absolutely untouchable and unreachable by the mundane dirt; hence so much fragile. We love to watch this sort of flower due to its unearthly pure appearance. As for the term 'Bliss,' it has a bunch of meanings in the east, more than in the west, I guess, among them 'only a mad man can really be happy'; it's because there is no blissfulness in the realm we are dwelling so far. . . This piece is a great work and a highly appreciated attainment indeed. Cheers, alex

An interesting image exploration that shows how many ways an object can be appreciated. Politicizing a tangible appreciation gives depth and enlightenment to light and its many spectral opportunities to see differently. Liked this a lot, John.

Bliss. An immanent act of mind. Buddha proffered (too): "A liberated mind is the greatest bliss." Bodhidharma proffered: "To seek is to suffer. To seek nothing is bliss." Hmmm. Deepak Chopra proffered: "Bliss is not a feeling but a state of being. In the state of bliss everything is loved." Much to chew on. Personally I believe there is a tiny amount of blissfulness attained in being able (at times) to free your thoughts as you have here. Well done. r

When I saw the title of this poem, John, I knew I was in for a wild ride. I was not disappointed. "Fragility of Bliss" gives the world a complete essay in poetical form concerning Bliss and its longevity, or lack of. Never have I read a more potent grouping of thoughts turned into words. Never. This is an amazing write my talented friend
