- The Joshua Tree -

By John Herlihy

The Joshua tree grows out of arid desert sands,

Striking a lonely appearance in harsh, dry lands,

Standing solitary, in silhouette, against twilight,

Appearing pugnacious, as if readying for a fight.

Fight it must against the stark desert condition,

If it ever hopes to bear fruit and come to fruition.

The tree raises knotted fists with extended arms,

Both the darkness and light offer soothing balms.

Given its name by Mormans in clothing threadbare,

They saw Joshua there extending his arms in prayer.

Ranchers use them to build fences, miners for fuel,

Indians mashed its blooms to sweeten their gruel.

The mighty Joshua tree still stands unique and tall,

Another of God’s creation that never seems small.

I NEVER KNEW IT'S NAME...BUT NOW THAT I DO, IT'S CERTAINLY REASONABLE. THANKS FOR THE SHORT HISTORY ABOUT THIS TREE WHICH SUBSTANTIATES A GREAT TRUTH ABOUT GOD AND HIS CREATIONS, INCLUDING US; ONE THING CREATED BY HIM, TOUCHES MANY LIVES AND SERVES A MULTITUDE OF PURPOSES. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

A wonderful ode to the Joshua Tree. I used that tree as my image when my doctoral classmate who became our VP and hired me at TSU, Dr. Joshua Hill, died at the young age of 57 from an aneurysm after returning to Houston from an overseas trip to Nigeria.

Josh loved his tree and tried to get landscapers to plant some on our university grounds.

A very different flavor of poem this morning. This does seem to raise its arms in praise of God, or in supplication for peace perhaps. Very nice poem that educates as well as entertains. I do like this very much.
