 -- Follow That Star --

John Herlihy

I looked into the wonderland of sky,

Deep in the heavens high upon high.

Stars were grazing on specks of dark,

As diamonds in the rough, silent, hark.

Why do stars always leave us in wonder?

When we look at them, we feel thunder.

Then, I saw a solitary, oh so lonely star,

Wishing to follow it, to capture it in a jar.

Run I did, there thru the darkness deep,

Laughing, falling, ready enough to weep.

The star always there, just beyond reach;

I stopped to stare, the heavens to beseech.

The mystery before me, near yet oh so far.

Beckoning me to follow that solitary star.

Pursue it, catch it, then make it our own,

A stream of light into life’s tapestry sewn.

This poem was so lovely and it spoke to me of troubled times in my past. For many, many years I fought with severe depression. Many times I played mind games with bottles of pills and, a couple of times, with a gun. But before I could act on them, I had the droll thought, "If you do kill yourself, you KNOW everything you ever wanted will be there tomorrow." Somehow I knew that wasn't me thinking. Then there appeared from somewhere, again in my mind, the image of a brilliant flickering flame and it gave me the strength to carry on. Whenever things got really bad I would hang on to that image. Eventually I found a way out of the darkness, but I've often shared my story with those still suffering. Sometimes I was declared insane by some who thought me ridiculous, but most were inspired by my story to find their own flickering flames. Thank you for this poem. May it inspire others in any way they need.

I never felt any "thunder" from stars, but you certainly have written an enchanting piece about them. I also haven't tried to catch a star, but have tried to catch fireflies in a jar. Eventually letting them go because, in a jar, even with holes punched in the top, they soon expired.

What a beautiful poem so full of wonderment! Your words paint a picture of a clear evening sky.............oh, that "solitary star"! It has the attention captured by the reader.

Love ya!
