-- BEHIND CLOSED EYELIDS --

By John Herlihy

Whenever I close my eyes,

I observe a darkness bleak.

The blackness tells no lies,

Offers a quiet venue to seek.

The lids close down my world,

The light tucked away, furled.

Darkness resembles silence,

They make up a holy alliance.

No sound or light, in absence,

Why then do I feel a presence.

Suddenly I have need to stare,

The staring makes me aware.

This cavern of deepest night,

Now shining spirals of light.

A spectacle of infinite form,

Rhythms my mind to adorn.

Awash in feelings of peace,

Purest light never to cease.

This sounds much like my mindfulness experiences. I love what happens when I allow my mind to quieten and let go of the madness of life around me (I'll be using it a lot this coming election year!). Such serenity to be found there if you just let it come to you. I liked this poem.

Your poem speaks of a vision of light. Quite striking and nowhere near my experience. Like you, I like my sleeping place to be dark and void of anything but night sounds in the distance. From that I transition into deep, dreamless sleep quite easily. But it was when I am close to waking that vivid dreams of light in color as if it were made today fill my mind with wonder, often for their strangeness and origin that I know not of. The source of much of my muse. But I have yet to, "see the light…" Except of course, the wonderful light of dawn.

beautiful write, although when I close my eyes, my imagination still lets me see lots of things.

"Purest light never to cease." Many a philosopher has written about the light of darkness, the intrinsic value of that inner light only you can comprehend. Another of your many reminders in poetic form for the reader to stop, pause, take in another mystery of the quiet life, the kind, as you say, is available beneath closed eyelids. As I read this, I was streaming one of my favorite musical artists for my writing mood. Joep Beving. I think you'll appreciate him, especially the "Prehension" album. Kudos on this floating poem of wisdom.

Truth dwells in the Light. We just need to be vigilant always about what masquerades as light, see it for what it is, and stand against it. Nicely imaged John. Enjoyed.
