-- ME AND MY SHADOW --

John Herlihy

Ah, my shadow, my ape,

Always there, never late.

A most endearing mate,

Ever willing to simply wait.

Always there by my side,

From this ape I never hide.

The only one I can confide,

In my footsteps to reside.

Always cavorts in wonder,

Never steals my thunder.

Follows when I run asunder,

Mimics me when I plunder.

If I am dark, my shadow fair,

I may look, but it does stare.

In my fear, I may never dare,

But my shadow still has flair.

Thru days I am senseless,

When my road is endless.

My life is full of emptiness,

My shadow in dark fulness.

To my shadow, I say goodbye,

It just follows me on the fly.

Always there, pretending shy,

Never leaves, never know why.

Every dance my shadow apes,

When I nod, my shadow shakes.

My thoughts it never forsakes,

As though my soul it recreates.

To my shadow, I waved goodbye,

My shadow waved back on the sly.

I couldn’t escape its mocking eye,

As if my shadow were saying ‘Hi’.

My shadow self, my ruthless judge,
Never allowed me to begrudge,
The hideous truth it outlined there,
My roundness to the world laid bare.

A very clever look at how our shadow is always with us, aping and mocking us. Like the old radio show declared, The Shadow Knows, in a deep, mysterious booming voice.

Looks like I have a 5 o'clock shadow, so I better run and get it shaved…

I've discovered that my old faithful shadow dislikes me intensely. Drat!

Felt like I was reading another Aesop fable. Wonderfully simple, yet bringing the magic of shadows for anyone willing to play a bit, young or old. Loved this one.

What an enjoyable write, John!! Shadows can be so entertaining. Shadow shows were always fun with a light and a sheet. Shadow puppets used to be my father's talent as he would make rabbits and seagulls against the wall with his hands. Toddlers stand in awe of their shadows when they first notice them......perhaps their first playmate!!! You last line made me smile!!

Love ya!

Jane
