 -- Snowscape --

By John Herlihy

Winter fills us with its touch of snow,

Heart-felt emotions we come to know.

With the enchantment of falling flakes,

With the enrichment a snowman makes.

What about inner peace it doth bestow,

Forget not brightness in moonlight glow.

I saw the sorrow of snow-covered trees,

Snow frost traces lace in winter leaves.

Ah, the glorious hope that snow brings,

In a night blizzard, my heart literally sings.

And yes, slow-falling flakes recall sorrow,

Each individual flake soon gone tomorrow.

Delicacy of snow assumes the air of a fairy,

The fragility of snow known to be legendary.

The grip of such emotions never pretends,

Seasons change, but God’s truth never ends.

Snow is fun when it does blow,
Watching piles of it grow,
I see little of it anymore,
So I buy a snow globe,
And sit watching it fall in my toasty robe...-e-

Yes, seasons change, but God's truth never ends, nor does the truth of the universe and its mysterious creations still a challenge. Beautiful work here, John. We don't give enough attention to the magic of Nature and its secrets. Great work, once again.

Interesting musings, I think, about something that can be both beautiful and dangerous. It's one of those things with meanings that are sharply relative to the individual. To a child its fun and an unexpected school break. To a member of the Donner party it would have meant something far different. God's truth lies in both directions.

Beautiful poem. I love the snow. I'm glad you mentioned that these snowy days also bring a bit of sorrow, I'm not sure why that happens, maybe because the snow slows us down and makes us think, pondering the power of nature to alter our lives.

The best thing about snow, is that it covers a multitude of sins in a blanket of white. I thought this was a great until the last line. That line just didn't seem to go with the rest of the poem.
