MIRROR POEMS: THE LIE

-- A Pure Lie --

John Herlihy

We characterize lies as false, sinister and untrue ,

As malicious and evil as anything we ever knew.

How can we understand the sense of the pure lie?

The word ‘pure’ uttered the whole person to decry.

The accused is not just guilty of a lie white or gray;

An implication lingers all utterly dark what they say.

Let’s face it, language can take an interesting turn;

We sometimes use words to show our hearts burn.

The eyes glow, the tongue is sharp, the lips are taut;

Pure lies echo in ways that might never be sought.

Up against the little white lie, the pure lie pure evil,

As if uttered by the fiery lips of a red-cloaked devil.

A pure lie lays claim to be the ultimate lie for sure,

Left behind the question: what makes a lie impure?

-- An Impure Lie --

John Herlihy

An impure lie may leave us some room for digression;

An element of the truth may give pause for reflection.

How do we truly understand the sense of an impure lie?

The word ‘impure’ uttered in order the pure lie to decry.

The liar not simply accused of uttering some pure evil,

As though issued forth from the lips of a hissing devil.

In fact, language can qualify words with a useful hint,

In order to ensure a true sense what a person meant.

The eyes lowered, the mouth crooked, tongue in cheek,

A pure liar seems arrogant, while the impure liar meek.

Up against the absolute quality rendered by a pure liar,

The impure liar may come across as a hesitant decrier.

A pure lie will lay claim to be the ultimate lie for sure,

That’s why I always prefer to talk with a liar ‘impure’.

I think I understand what you are saying here John; that pure lies are the intentional ones, and the impure ones are the ones we either speak ignorantly or speak for emotional impact because we understand that humans are often motivated more by emotion than by cool, calm reason and logic. The problem is that we humans are not patient enough to ask the speaker what their intent in speaking was- to communicate object truth as God views it, or a more subjective 'truth' that may be based on a limited, selective perception. You wrote on a topic that we all need to understand more clearly, especially in these politically divisive times. You made me think with your poem, and for that I am grateful.Well written in my opinion. Please continue to use your freedom of speech! Many of us will listen.

LOVE THE MIRRORS, JOHN...YOU DO THEM SO WELL. NOW IN RESPECT AS TO THE SUBJECT; THERE ARE NO THREE ROADS DEFINING A 'LIE'. WE EITHER TELL THE TRUTH OR WE DON'T. REMEMBER; 'THOU SHALT NOT LIE' AND IT COMES WITHOUT ANY...IFS, ANDS, OR BUTS. THUS, I DON'T BELIEVE IN PURE OR IMPURE LIES OR WHATEVER. THAT SAID; WE ARE ALL GUILTY AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER OF TELLING A LIE, WE ALL HAVE GONE THERE. AND, NO MATTER HOW VALID OUR REASONS ARE, KEEP IN MIND THAT ALL LIES AREN'T MALICIOUS. ONE CAN FEEL THEY ARE HELPING SOMEONE OR PROTECTING SOMEONE OR EVEN THEMSELVES. ANYWHO, WE CAN ONLY THANK GOD FOR CALVARY AND THE BLOOD WHICH, WITH REPENTANCE, FORGIVES US AND...HOPEFULLY...BRINGS US TO A PLACE WHERE NO MATTER WHAT THE ISSUE IS...WE WON'T LIE. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

John, the whole idea of gradient lies is distressing to me, perhaps because so much of my past career was steeped in misrepresentation, little white lies, and the big, unconscionable ones. Only when I opted to leave that environment, hooked up with my present wife did I realize through her influence that not keeping to the truth, for whatever the reason, was a defeating exercise in self-destruction. Your poem is a grim reminder of lying as a sure journey to unhappiness. Great job, John.

These 'mirror poems' are uniquely you John. I think you're onto to something here. If a legacy is important to you, this style might be yours. Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed. rlc

You are a mighty tactician when it comes to writing poetry with such strict structure that it is amazing how well they turn out. But every once in a while, the structure gets in the way of the message. But this poem is not the case, except for a couple of lines that don't seem to fit.

We can take the poem as a mirror of itself in the second version like you stated. I can understand. But somehow, I find the word "impure" just doesn't do it for me. To use it as a modifier of lie, I would come up with lies that were particularly nasty, repugnant, tainted, or otherwise offensive. Not what you meant by using the word, impure.

Thinking about it, perhaps the word, "flawed" might be better but doesn't contain the root, pure, like impure does to complete your poetic structure.

A speaker, writer, even a liar, can only lead us to the water. If we have been amused, beguiled, or inspired, we drink. If we have been misled, we take a piss (figuratively speaking, of course). I tend to depart company with both the pure and the impure liar long before we reach the water. It's those clever liars that give me problems. But what a premise you have given us! And that's no lie!

Evil is as Evil does, in lies and in all other things as well. I've always held that lies in and of themselves are not necessarily bad things. It's the intent behind them that matters. Lying to protect someone from pain or to nobly allay fears is far different that lying for profit. It's the liar's motives that make the difference.
