-- TO MEAN SOMETHING --
John Herlihy
May our sorrows and joys mean something,
An extra dimension to what life may bring.
We all have our own way to explain our life,
Heaven and oblivion intermingled with strife.
Chance, happenstance, karma, just plain fate,
We are but the end result of what we make.
The death of a loved one, even my pet turtle,
Christmas stockings, kissing under the myrtle.
A failure to win, to receive that valued reward,
To whisper hopes, hear nothing from the Lord.
We make our way wondering what it all means,
We don’t know for sure, life a mystery it seems.
To accept destiny as it comes, our song to sing,
So that our sorrows and joys mean something.

I recall we had those turtles as pets but don't recall mourning any that died. I do recall getting quite good at "winging" flies with my flyswatter so they would be still alive when presented to my pet turtle that gladly chomped down on and swallowed the still wiggling treat. I just felt that the yellow powder sprinkled on the water was just not good food for my little amphibian captive.
