-- Between the Tides -- John Herlihy The great surges, The sea filling in the day. The rushing currents, Ebbing and flowing away. The great surges, As in the tidal breast. The stirring desires, As in the heaving chest. The rush to fulness, In the approaching plenitude. The rush to emptiness, In the resulting quietude. The force of the tides, Never linger, never last. The law of the tides, Always return from the past. Hearts unfold, When the tide shifts. The waiting now over, As the heart uplifts. The advancing tides, Time seems at play. The receding tides, Time steals away. The tides deliver, To the waning day. The tides shiver, In the waxing night. The moment between tides, A peaceful gratitude. Time briefly stands still, In aching solitude. The epic struggle, Between emptiness and plenty. The dual impulses of nature, Of the one and the many. Between the tides, There to mark the hour. One can't read this sequential exploration of text and feelings without flashing on the tempest that precedes most tidal experiences. If only more of us, metaphorically, would harken to the consequences of storm and know that one can surf off the caps to a sandy or rocky shore. Not all is good in a tempest's aftermath. Well posed for contemplation.

I like the cadence of this poem. I can both hear and feel the endless tides of life as if I were standing on its shore taking it all in. Enjoyed.
