-- No Sea, No Sky --
John Herlihy
A haze of murky heat,
No sea, no sky.
Mist made the hour complete,
No greeting, no reply.
The eerie feeling of death,
No wind, no breeze.
Hot as a boar’s breath,
Stillness causing unease.
The horizon in flames,
No day, no night.
Dusk in blood-red stains,
The passing day in flight.
The night never so dark,
No moon, no stars.
Listening to silence, stark,
The world behind bars.
The dawn from darkness bled,
No night, no day.
Faint light but a thread,
In so little so much to say.
The ground, sacred, serious,
The sky too colorful, too bright.
The sea too vast, imperious,
Darkness too full of the night.
