-- Problem with Eternity --
John Herlihy
As fleeting as time is,
As rushed as we feel,
As short as the day seems,
As the vague future never real.
The future we patiently await,
The past happened and is gone.
The present passes thru future’s gate,
Sweet memories return as sing-along.
I have a problem with eternity,
How it drags on for far too long.
What is it stripped of its mystery,
What effort to sing its endless song.
Virgin nymphs with almond-shaped eyes,
Mountain springs to flush out despair.
Golden-spired cities sparkling with surprise,
Processions of monks chanting prayers.
I see no good in that kind of forever,
The day is long, but comes to an end.
But what of a day that will end never,
No night with a moon its glow to spend.
For now, I am content with passing time,
The unknown is known by filling the hours.
Every precious moment that I use is mine,
Such limited time offers unlimited powers.
