-- The NightWalker --
John Herlihy
The nightwalker never sleeps
He moves stealthily as shadow
His breath whispers secrets in the night
His is here; then he is gone; who knows where
The nightwalker never sleeps
His feet wade thru lakes and ponds
His head stirs the clouds
He licks the snow of mountain peaks
The nightwalker never sleeps
Twilight gives darkness his name
He goes by no other name
Never has a light to see by
The nightwalker never sleeps
Waiting on the edge of the East
Twilight kills the day in its blood
Scarlet river rays stream in the heavens
The nightwalker never sleeps
But gathers dreams to carelessly disperse
Dreams to fill the multitude with awakening
When the soul stands astride life and death
The nightwalker never sleeps
But takes us by the hand
To lead us through the darkness
Into the realm of slumberland
The nightwalker never sleeps
The little death lies upon the world
The wind carries the echo of heartbeats
As the nightwalker makes his rounds
The nightwalker never sleeps
But lives in another world
His arrival is sudden and lasting
Not there, then there, then gone
The nightwalker never sleeps
He smells of cut grass and rain
Moon shadows follow him in awe
Starlight never gives his secret away
The nightwalker never sleeps
Spreading peace like stardust, like mist
He lies as a mountain range waiting
As mountain springs release earth’s tears
The nightwalker never sleeps
As the moon invisible to the day
Yet he roams unknown in daytime hours
His darkness seen in another way.
