-- Small Cruelties --
John Herlihy
The world filled with small cruelties,
There in the depths ready to surface.
People commit them with such ease,
Stirred up by their own vile purpose.
Being unnoticed. therefore unchosen,
With no one paying me any attention.
This inhumanity makes me feel frozen,
At the mercy of people’s pretention.
Being snubbed or perhaps overlooked,
As if my presence held no clear force.
A lost minnow, there to be hooked,
How is it that life can turn so coarse.
All those small cruelties so easily born,
Inflicting a thousand cuts I sadly mourn.
