-- First Love -- John Herlihy The seedlings of first love, Planted in the lonely soul. The first flight of the dove, Searching to become whole. Youth’s happy years spent, But only one thing missing. True love never before lent, The one longed for blessing. Life’s fabric is still not torn, Such fine weave yet unspun. First love is yet to be born, Such intimacy still unwrung. I THINK WE ALL HAVE 'BEEN THERE' JOHN. BUT EVEN IF ONE, WHILE ON THIS JOURNEY, CLAIMS ANOTHER HUMAN SOUL AS 'THE UNFORGETABLE LOVE OF THEIR LIVES...IT IS CERTAINLY HOPED THAT ONE DAY, BEFORE THEY 'SLEEP' THEY WILL MEET 'HIM'...WHO LOVED THEM FIRST. I just recently wrote about my first love in '10 North Waverly Place." She was five years older than me. Although our love was never destined to set down deep roots and blossom and bloom, I have never forgotten her, or what we experienced together. Enjoyed your poem, John. Well done. r

I've heard friends speak warmly and nostalgically of their first love with a sense of loss. I was never allowed to have that first love of childhood. But your poem makes me think of what might have been had things been different. Beautifully and sensitively written.
