-- Mercy’s Shade –
John Herlihy
The blessing of mercy comes to us in many a form,
Of rich folds from the curtain of benevolence torn.
In tortuous heat of the desert, the mercy of shade,
After trudging weary miles, in spring waters wade.
Suffering bouts of despair lead to feeling forsaken,
We make choices, at times the wrong road taken.
Life’s mystery can lead to areas beyond our reach,
The only recourse left a merciful God to beseech.
There at the end of a rope, piteous cries of mercy,
Uttered by the abandoned and lost, the unworthy.
Mercy found in the cavern, the abyss, a deep well,
To touch the mind and heart with its mystical spell.
To those on the brink, no hope of disaster to evade,
Enter the hallowed grounds of God’s eternal shade.

I agree that formula works for believers who suffer from mental fears, but it is very rare for anyone to be able to walk for 40 days and 40 nights in the desert without dying of thirst after four days or earlier from heat exhaustion, and if there is water and shade, dying of starvation after 21 days without food.
