-- The Everlasting Present – John Herlihy In the joy of an everlasting present, How would we remember the past? A cherished past still ever existent, Another past only in memory to last. In truth, there is no everlasting present, As each moment slips stealthily into the past. The past itself poses an everlasting present, Another life living in memory to hold fast. We live our lives here and now in the present, Becoming what we – the person – did in the past. We are the individuals who built this life present, In moving forward, we bring with us the past. The satisfaction and joys of the eternal present, Built upon the suffering and sorrows of the past. We remember sufferings with joy in the present, If for no other reason these sufferings did not last. Future and past bookends of an everlasting present, The eternal future soon to face as the eternal past. So true. There is only the present, so live in the now and dream about the future and what might be and revisit the past, as you walk down memory lane.

Your poem depicts the moving in and out present very well, as though it were individual snapshots in a movie of our lives.

Fortunately, modern technology enables us not only to have snapshots from our past, but to make videos of our past that we can go back at any time and watch us as we really were, over and over again if we wish.

The dichotomy inherent in future and past reality is refreshingly explored in this allegory of the ever stealth-like subject of past and future. For me, the primary take-away was your reinforcement of living in the present, enjoying the present knowing it is but milliseconds away from being the past... representing but a memory. Loved this rendering, John.
