-- Nothing At All --

John Herlihy

What are you thinking, someone asked?

I had to think about what I was thinking.

After a lot of thinking, I had the answer.

Nothing, I said to someone, nothing at all.

In gazing intently toward the distant horizon,

I realized it seemed as if I were thinking.

Thinking of something measured, deep, profound,

Lost in my thoughts with no desire to speak.

Indeed, I often find myself as if lost in my mind,

An interlude of absolute rest, cool and silent.

A pause from the running river of thoughts,

Unending, uninvited thoughts making a claim.

Who do they think they are, these thoughts,

As if another witness had made itself home.

An alter-ego with so much baggage to unpack,

All fighting for my attention, I the true witness.

Unwanted fear there in some corner of mind,

Worries, anxieties, with no truth, value, form.

Sometimes lies, even, that we begin to believe,

With no depth of truth, yet have dug their stake.

And so, whenever possible, when I think of it,

I empty my mind, put all my thoughts to rest.

I lay down quietly in the graveyard of my mind,

Quietly feeling the fulness of emptiness, blessed.

Wonderful poem. You express the experience so well of those moments when fully present, times to treasure.

INDEED, MY FRIEND. SOMETIMES YOU JUST HAVE TO KICK EVERYTHING OUT, SHUT IT DOWN AND SAY, "ALL RIGHT, THAT'S IT, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH...GOOD NIGHT!" (SMILE). PERFECT IN EVERY WAY, JOHN. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

A perfect picture for one seeking solitude. Odin says it’s nigh unto impossible to achieve solitude unless one resides in a rural area. That would be me; however, even I have difficulty maintaining the stillness of a rural area. As Gilda Radner always said in her portrayal of Roseanne Roseannadanna, “It’s always something.” As we speak, my burglar alarm is and has been beeping uncontrollably for days. I must wait until Monday to call upon ADT to come to my rescue. Yes, even we who live in rural areas have our moments.

smile ! I totally understand this John, I too sometimes get lost in the turmoil, only to find myself seeking solace in the quietude of silence and emptiness, that is why I meditate it keeps me humbly empty,
Hope to read more soon, and hear some too. :)

Great way that you have described the total bliss that comes with thinking of nothing, feeling that stillness to the full.

An ideal objective, but vastly difficult to achieve in the fast-lane global society we live in. Worthy of reaching out for, but realistically, for many in my observations, well near impossible, lest one lives in a rural area of less urban's cacophony of distractions of all sorts.
