Presence in Absence

by John Herlihy

We think of absence as an endless bottomless pit,

Quintessential loneliness we never dare to admit.

In the heart of absence presence there to emerge,

Absence a presence waiting for emptiness to purge.

Absence without presence an empty fathomless hole,

Even in the depths of a well a speck of sunlight stole.

Absence brings on the feelings of all that we missed,

Footsteps on an empty corridor reaching their crest.

Feelings of absence an empty cup waiting to be filled,

A beating heart, lonely and sad, waiting to be stilled.

Feelings of desperation we wish to escape in a rush,

Absence brings a sounding silence to listen to – hush.

The empty bubble of absence broken after oh so long,

Breath of feathers, brush of wings, notes of bird song.

THERE IS NO DOUBT ABOUT IT, THAT...IN THE ABSENCE OF EVERYTHING WE THOUGHT WE NEEDED AND JUST COULDN'T BEGIN TO DO WITHOUT...THERE IS THE PRESENCE OF GOD! AMEN AND AMEN. WONDERFUL! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

You sum up well with "Absence brings a sounding silence to listen to" giving the reader the hint of purpose, even to a state of mind with absence. Your piece reminds me of what there is to be learned in absence and the knowledge that presence often takes a great deal of patience to wait out. Fortunately, as you last line points out, such a bubble of absense does at some point burst, and of course, there are many subjective designs for presence. Enjoyed this. Thank you for posting.

Robin Ouzman Hislop's poetry is certainly in dialogue with some of the key architects of the 'poetics of indeterminacy' – both the Modernist strands represented by the likes of Beckett and Stein, and the postmodernist strands represented, initially,
