Sounds in the Night by John Herlihy Nearing midnight I stretch out in bed My spine cracks open I listen to the wind in the pines The tooting of a distant train A coyote yipping in the pasture An owl footing near the barn Fact is: I feel a little lonely Tree limbs scratch the window Whispers in the house settling The ominous creek of the stairs Footsteps along the hallway The drum of my beating heart The whine of the door hinge I now feel a little frightened The flutter of my shallow breath The beating of my fearful heart The dark shadow across my soul I open my sleepy eyes wide I see nothing in the darkness Hear nothing worthy of note Only the grim silence of the night Touched by a spot of moonlight - - - - Copyright © John Herlihy Tuesday 6 January 2026

As you so adroitly point out, sound of the night, and especially those from the darkness, hold imagination firmly in creative mode. Your poem brings an otherwise unremarkable room into a sharp sensorial life. I concure with your exploration, as I too have had similar arrests in the night. I actually find the genesis for poetry often in such imaginings. Thanks for reminding us of the wonderland of darkness.

Reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe. Reminded me of the night sounds I used to hear when I lived in the country out on the summer night.

Also of the sounds that one hears in the night that might be frightening. If you don't know what caused them.
