Where have all the sweet poems gone...?

Where have all the sweet poems gone…?

Have they been ground under the foot of pain?

Have they been buried after they were slain?

Have the poets that write them been drowned in flame?

Must we forever suffer the ill effects of the poetic mundane…?

No longer do we read of Jack & Jill, less they are getting killed,

No longer do we read of animals, less they are getting grilled,

No longer do we find interest in poems of death and destruction,

Poems that say we are in this life quite altogether unfulfilled…

Sweet poems from our childhood gone,

Where did they go, dead is the fawn,

Oil spills by ships owned by Exxon,

Can only make one yawn,

Though what of the creatures the oil does spawn…?

Subject matter changed, maybe for the better?

Or is it beyond help, my abilities restrained by these fetters,

I write as much as possible, sending in bottles my letters,

Hoping I can at least touch the world as more than just another debtor…

Ed, you are SO RIGHT! I agree with you, and have been thinking the same thing. So I have made a decision to try and write a few happy, little ditties. The world does need to smile more. As for you, you always give me a smile with your writing, and you put the facts right up front. Love your style! Love, Leah

Sorry you don't read my poems Ed they aren't what you describe;-)
Though there is too much of what you write about in our society,
a poet must be free to write what they see,as you are free to do...

Right on, Ed! I do so agree, that poems that make one smile, poems of nature's beauty , of love's power and of sweet treats, kids antics, and life's little boo boos, are seen less and less. Thanks for the reminder that the world could use some cheering up!
