In a way, I wonder if the arguments that occur between fathers and sons (mothers and daughters sometimes, too) aren't a bit like the ones that come into play in the animal kingdom? Once the hormones are raging, the competition exists between all the male animals no matter their relationship. It is a survival instinct and as boys progress into manhood, they come to realize that their first love, which was their mother, who no matter how much she loved you, chose your father over you as her partner. Perhaps we are more the beast than the spirit in these matters. In the end, the fight really was pointless and degraded the quality of the time we had to spend with our parents. Sadly, it is only with age that we gain wisdom and come to realize how we wasted so much precious time.

A strong paternal bond is never really broken. Take his tears and water the good memories you shared with them.
I only saw my Dad cry once, a cry of 'I merrit the wrang bloody wumin!' (I married the wrong woman). The stuck it out for nearly 50 years until he passed away.
As a father myself, I have cried in anguish over major health events affecting my wife and our daughter. My daughter never got busted but certainly tested our patience. She is now a stoical woman of 30 years of age and I am immenssely proud of her.
