Poem Artwork

Cleaning bait out of rental boats,

Cleaning fish from plastic totes,

Checking in rod, reels & line,

Pumping gas on the floating dock,

Never at that young age watching the clock…

Anchorage Marina, still sort of there,

Always in my mind will it be, most fair,

My first gainful employment, short of writing,

Only summertime work, NOT in the winters cold most biting…

Got to work then by boat,

Could of ridden my bike,

Could have walked, almost could have swam,

I wasn’t then a small tyke,

I loved that job better than school,

Never had a love for any kind of exam…

Nostalgia at its best. I picked beans in the field like the undocumented worker I was.

ED - GOOD JOB, MATEY!

Around that same ripe ole age, in summer as well, I 'plugged' and sold Watermelons from
Pier Six of Baltimore's harbor, from my Grand-Pa Captain Isaiah Madkins' 'Bug-Eye' Ketch,
"The Ella Covington" ...

"Ah, Yes - Those Were The Days!" TomKat.

Ed,
It sounds like a wonderful first job! I love fishing, I don't go as much now as I used too, but I enjoy it!

Sounds like you need to find another dock that needs some summer help. Surely there must be one or two on the east coast that could use some help. Start lookin, Bro.

Memories of a time when the heart and soul was at peace. Things we remember as we grow older and how little attention paid at the time...

Be always safe,

the love of what you were doing sure shines through, i agree with Kate, it would be wonderful to find employment in that area agin and perhaps regain some of that boyhood joy

Yes, I could also totally visualise this one, Ed. Any chance you could take time to revist this "gainful employment" as an adult? Even as some sort of volunteer, if it brings you so much happiness... Your love of this part of your life shines in the details so fondly remembered and ever-kindled in your heart. The boy and the man come together seamlessly in this write. xx

When we were 15, the world was an oyster. It was far more interesting than to stay in school and facing the teachers everyday. I'm glad you had great experience in your first job!!
