We didn’t yet know the score,
At the time we were four,
We played as we got older at war,
We ran the beach, climbed the dunes,
Chased the seagulls & fished till we dropped,
Never was there a day that felt a bore…
We shopped at Miss Schmidts candy shop,
And walked to school, was only a couple blocks,
We never called soda by the name of pop,
And drank our share even when we had the chicken pox…
We body surfed the waves & used our rafts,
We surfed on ten foot surf boards,
And swam till we were water logged,
We brought sand into the house & made mom scream,
Ate tons and tons of hot dogs and ice cream…
We swam out too far making the lifeguards whistle,
And rode waves to shore like a human missile,
All the kids that visited the shore said we were lucky,
To live there year around, but we didn’t know better,
Playing in the marsh mud was always mucky…
We had boats of our own,
And rode them into the ocean,
I used to be able to see my beachfront home,
From beyond the breaking waves,
My uncle thought I was crazy,
As my boat leaked and was so little,
Hey it floated, so what if the wood was a little brittle,
We were kids and as far as we knew,
Would live forever, nothing could of us kill,
We knew well the ocean and surrounding bays,
And just played away our youthful days…

Beautiful memories Ed, that no one can take away. They will live in your heart forever. I remember my childhood too, Mama had 8 kids..me the oldest. We'd play roll a bat ( bet you don't know what that is) softball, dodge ball, we'd walk for miles or ride our bikes..I sure miss those days. Thanks Ed, for taking me back in time.
