I was younger in this picture, by maybe a few years...can't tell how old I was there...

Poem Artwork

So little of the world had he seen,

Had yet to, like so many, meet his queen,

Kissed his first girl, Eleanor Feen,

At the ripe old age of thirteen…

Not yet in high school,

Hung out at the beach & pool,

Surfed through the breakers,

Worked part-time at the local bakers…

Tall & skinny was he at that age,

Tried to wear clothes that were the rage,

A “naru” shirt he wore to dances,

Bell bottom jeans & took many chances,

Still never did he really have many romances…

River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood by David Thompson

For a time, I perched myself on a flat rock, comparing my life with the Guyandotte River. Just as its tributaries replenish it daily, changing it in some small—sometimes great—degree, so have the day-to-day occurrences of life changed me. Like the ri
