Going to school by boat...

The boat in the picture is NOT mine but as close as I could find...

Poem Artwork

What a great memory I just had,

Nothing like I usually get, bad,

This one came to me in a dream,

I remember going to high school by boat, 12 miles,

Most folks from the midwest would think it a scream…

I had a 16 foot Starcraft at that particular time,

She wasn’t pretty, but it floated & had a 75 horse,

I left home at about six, and motored to Ocean City,

The inter-coastal water way was my course…

Only one obstacle did stand in my way,

An old train bridge was not open,

I had to wedge my way underneath,

Thankfully the tide was out far enough to fit,

And my windshield did almost get a crack,

Didn’t have to deal with that on the way back…

I docked the boat at the yacht club,

Got a ride in from there with my friends, the Chapmans,

Wish I still had that old boat, as later she sank,

She may have been an old aluminum beast,

But one thing she was never, was a tub…

I love this poem.....Think about that! today you would have to wear a lifejacket as a minor and you would have to be licensed (and registereed in the correct state)......

what fun!.....you didn't flip that boat doing a prop stand did you???? .....actually a friend of mine died doing that with a whaler....it took a while to find the body....it was REALLY sad. He was by himself. Sorry for the ugly side story but, I can appreciate this poem...........did you hit a rock???? how did it sink, really?

speaking of destruction if you have a small boat now......pull it out of the water before Irene!!!!

Good going, Ed. At least you didn't have to walk uphill both ways to get to school.

I am glad you shared this little part of your past with us, for we old salt sea lovers....share a love of the ocean that we will probably take to our graves.
