Smell of Home...

To this day,
I still feel this way,
As I do enter my home town,
Crossing the green salt marsh & bay...

Poem Artwork

When I round the bend,

Passing under the parkway bridge,

It hits me smack in the nose,

The smell of salt marsh,

Anyone who lived in Sea Isle of this knows…

As a child asleep in the backseat,

Riding down from Philadelphia,

With mom & dad, a trip usually quite neat,

That child, me, doesn’t awaken till,

I did smell the smell of home,

Woke me up giving me a thrill…

Salt marsh can smell bad to some,

Not to me, from there I do come,

So many memories of childhood fun,

Through my mind still does it run..

Regardless of where we live, we always remember where we grew up as a special place. I get the feeling of, “coming home,” when I arrive back in California, even though I only lived there three years in my 20s. The smell of sausage curing on the streets of San Francisco comes to mind.

I grew up on the coast of California...
How I miss the smell of the salt air and the breeze...
I nearly lived on the beach at every opportunity...
When my parents were alive we drove up and down the
coast often...

Thank you for this wonderful memory you've shared and
the memory it brings back to me...

Beautiful lines when you write about such deep memories, of course smell is one of the deepest that would bring this forth, just the same, take a bath in that marsh, it will help, rid you of the other smells you have accumulated over the recent periods, ha. Bless ya!

When I round the bend coming into the Headlands I go over a bridge which crosses acres of fresh water marshland covering hundreds of square miles of Morton Salt mines............similar smell. I don't like it.

Love ya!
