My childhood is still there...

My childhood is, I guess, somewhere between the lines, as it were, in my hometown that has grown so much...

Poem Artwork

My house at Number 9 – 44th street is gone,
A condo complex in its place,
I still can remember from the house to the beach a race,
To play in the sand, swim in the sea & generally frolic in the sun,
From early morning till the sun did set,
We all enjoyed a childhood we’d never have again…

The Donut bar, a local hangout, changed to a condo too,
In fact most homes on my little island changed to the same,
To some I guess this appears to be rather lame,
But money & green are the reason nobodies blue,
Sea Isle City, NJ since our childhood grew…

But this being progress, those of us who remember,
Her in her infancy, miss the old ways & memories,
But still when I stand on the beach & look out to sea,
The old Sea Isle, my childhood & happiness is what I see…

Moderate temperatures, the seashore, and hangouts? What more could anyone ask for? Condos can be the bane of the earth.

Sounds like the carefree existence to have a childhood like that by the seashore.

The first three homes that I grew up in are gone as well.

Wonderful reflection of times past and realizing the price of "progress?". I feel the same when I go around the bend to my hometown. Sigh............

Love ya!

Pure poetry that many can relate to in this fast changing world of ours. Happily I live on an island with the sea no more than seven miles away from me on either side.

ED ... WELL DONE !

Dean Martin lyrics pop into my head ...
"Sweet Sweet, Memories you gave to me..."

I never even saw the Ocean until I was 17 !
My homestead . 1710 Light Street is still there,
but the neighborhood has also changed greatly.
An inner city rowhouse in South Baltimore, yet
many fun memories of playing childhood games:
Aggies, or marbles in the back yards & street gutters,
football baseball basketball curb-ball tennis swimming in the pool . Riverside Park.
What a misnomer... it was miles forests & railroad tracks away from the Patapsco River.

I don't have many happy memories myself, but I was brought up by the sea too. When I stand on the shore and look to the horizon all feels right but if I turn to look at the town, I recognize nothing - The town is now a city and my childhood home is buried forever beneath a vast Hotel car park... and they call it progress - I disagree.

Don't have many happy childhood memories, Ed, and have no idea what changes in Taylor, Arkansas has taken place over the years, but I assume there would be some. I'm happy you have your beautiful memories, buddy.
