Parental angst...?

He stops by every so often, & usually I find I need him then...

Poem Artwork

Dad & I would on occasion go out,
Usually we’d go, in summer, to the Cape May light,
On those few days that we did not fight,
And mom would always worry; we’d stay out till night…

Junk food & amusement rides, I always had fun,
And of course the ever present surf & sun,
I’d play all day, buying whatever I wanted,
And then for dinner, I’d eat hot dogs on a bun…

You gotta feel for dad,
He was playing the game without a rulebook,
He did not know how to raise a kid,
He was the disciplinarian, mom the loving one,
But he tried, gotta give that to him,
Around he stayed till in ’89 God of him took…

I still think of him on occasion,
Like this evening, I can’t say why,
Seems as if I’d have a dream,
Or maybe some other, on my part, persuasion,
Suffice it to say he stops by every now & then,
Most times I find I need him does he when…

Remember the good times you had with your dad
that's what I do...

Always,

My father lost his leg while inspecting brakes on a freight train. Flag man forgot to put up flag and the engineer backed over my fathers leg. He survived with the one leg.

Always recall the sunny hours. My dear ole par is always on my mind.

Some folk take to parenting with total abandon, whilst others seem to find the privilege an inner tug o war.

It's good you had a father that would take you out alone together. Unfortunately, by indulging you in junk food he set a precedent for eating habits that have affected your health greatly. From an early age, when out with my twin brother and my father, we always seemed to have a tussle because I was like my mother, and she, although he resented it, was in charge of the household and his reckless spending.

Dad was a hard worker and good provider as a truck driver. Fortunately, he didn't carry out some of his wild schemes like buying a farm. He was good at putting my brother and I to work so that he could listen to his ballgames on the radio.

Having fond memories of Dad, you are very lucky - I never knew mine ...and because of that, I'll never understand what he did or why he did it.
I have nothing to look back on... fondly or otherwise.

Everyone looks on their childhood now and again. It is apparent that you understood your father's actions in the line, "You gotta feel for dad". It's nice that he stops over.

Love ya!

Ed, I am very happy you have some good memories of your dad. At least it seems that he tried. Mine was not geared to raise a son, or daughter either probably. He just never seemed to know what to do with me, and I really needed him to counteract what I was getting from mother . . . Sorry, really didn't mean to go off like I did.
