Fun Memories from the Back of my Mind”

Get out of the house; it is summer & sun, mom would say,

Go to the beach, bodysurf, raft, build a castle and play,

Don’t come home till dark, or for dinner, that’s right,

Come home and get pajamas, if out you’re staying overnight…

Sleeping at Greg’s, or over at Lien’s, staying out late,

Going to the movies, Terry is letting us in, will be great,

Seeing all the movies, for free from the booth,

Dropping popcorn and ice on the ones kissing in the rear,

Playing Risk & Monopoly, at Terry’s house, no fear…

Running on the beach, splashing the lifeguards,

We can do that, we are mascots, we are so proud,

Go to get them lunch, so they don’t have to take their eyes,

Off of the bathers, the ones that don’t know how to swim,

We live here, we know how to swim, surf & raft, nothing ever grim…

Wearing only cut offs, no shirt, no shoes, no hat,

Well, well, well, just fancy that,

Pee in the ocean, no fear of sharks, or anything else for that matter,

Hot dogs on a stick, made with real deep fried batter,

Delicious they were from Sam’s Amusement park,

Got to play on the rides, every spring, to test them,

Bumper cars, kiddies Ferris wheel, boats and cars with bells,

Sleeping with windows open, no air conditioning, fresh salt air blowing in,

Our bicycles the only means of transportation, no rides from Mom,

She says go get exercise, in the sun and heat, always a treat…

Times they have changed, oh yes they have,

But memories they stay the same, both good and bad,

My hometown has changed too; the good times are remembered,

By those few of us that keep them going, so happy they were,

So happy and without cares we were also…

my childhood wasn't the best (a lot of verbal and mental abuse), but it could have been a lot worse!

I hear ya, Ed. I loved my childhood, too, and have lots of great old memories. But it never will be the same again where I grew up; my grand old childhood haunts in the big city are pretty sad places now.
