hound dog

Some months ago our beagle/JRT cross died in the course. In of time sweatie a eagle spay moved in. This celebrates both beasts.

I wish I were a hound dog

Dozing on the porch

Greeting every one with

my melodic baritone,

Sad eyes, and, metronome tail.

I wish I were a hound dog:

Patrolling my usual beat

Down the lane,

Through the garden,

‘round the pond.

I wish I were a hound dog:

Chasing rabbits through the meadow,

Keeping the foxes at bay,

baying the moon

as she cruises the skies,

lamenting her absence  on the

Nights when beneath strange she wtaks

I wish were a hound dog

Alert on the veranda snifting the air

For that one scent that would

Send me crashing through

fern and fen to that place

 where the days are  cool

 the nights warm and the rabbits

 slow.

But then, as Elvis would say, "You ain't nothing but a hound dog."

I wouldn't want to be a hound dog because they always seem to have those very sad, droopy eyes. But if you already have those sad, droopy eyes, I guess you'd fit right in. ;-)

Wishing to be a hound dog is not wistful thinking. Hounds are good.
