The Real Christmas Gift

This is a poem about the true meaning of Christmas. I wrote in on 12/2/07

You won't find your Christmas gift
Underneath a tree
You'll never see it advertised
In December, on TV

It won't come to you shining
Tied tightly with a bow
For you to rip it open
And, to your friends, to show

It will never be delivered
By Santa in his sleigh
It wasn't "made in China"

Or even in the USA

It will never need a battery
It will not float or fly
It can't be found on EBAY

Though you're more than free to try

"Toys For Tots" cannot attain it
Nor can the one who rings the bell
In front of the department stores
We've grown to know so well

It has an everlasting warranty
With satisfaction guaranteed
It's a "one-size-fits-all" Christmas gift
It will fill your every need

A box cannot contain it
Pretty paper will not hide
It's worth you cannot measure
Though some, I'm sure, have tried

This gift, conceived in Heaven
Came to us by virgin birth
Meant to die the very moment
When, as a babe, He came to Earth

This gift is not the birth itself
But the promise of eternal life
It's free to all who ask for it
Because He already paid the price

Baby Jesus, in a manger
The Sinless One, His Father gave
Then, to complete His mission

He went from cradle to the grave

But the grave, it couldn't hold Him
In just three days, He did arise
The truth of what was promised
Was fulfilled, to some surprise

So when you celebrate this Christmas
With your decorating flair
Look not UNDER for your gifts, this year
For they're just presents lying there

Look at your tree and please remember
Before the celebrating starts
He died ON a tree, known as the CROSS

To live forever in our hearts

A beautifully written about how somehow we have subverted the real meaning of a holy day into a time to bear gifts instead of a time of worship.

I am not religious, but Christ was a wonderful man that everyone should emulate and very few can.
