Spike
Oh God! You gotta be kidding, I know it just cain’t be!
You’ve got a puppy coming and you’re getting rid of me!
I remember, “ home forever and I dearly love you , Spike,”
No, I cain’t chase the ball now ,you don’t know what pain is like,
I remember, “ you’re a hero, attacked the thieves and saved my cars ,”
I cain’t help my back is ugly, that’s where I got the scars,
I remember, “ you’re a warming bedroll partner on all my hunting trips”
But I cain’t climb the hills now with arthritis in both hips,
I remember, “ Here’s a pretty toy just toss it all about?”
I can’t play or chew them and you throw them out,
I remember, “evenings by the fire place and sleeping at your feet”
My bed’s now in the hallway cause my snoring ain’t so neat ,
Once so strong and healthy like I was before,
Though crippled and disabled , I’ll still meet hell there at the door!
I can’t be your fun companion, but I’m still your dearest friend ,
My love is never ending, always there, it’s always been,
You say “ the place is crowded, there’s no room for two inside,”
I know a puppy needs the comfort, I’ll gladly live outside,
I can make it in the dog house but winter’s coming on,
I want you to be happy, I’ll love you till I’m gone.

Reminded me of Schatz (Schatzee, German for sweetheart) the stray mom took in who had many litters of pups we had to get rid of because no one wanted mixed breed dogs. But she kept one of her last pups when she got old and died. Pete became my younger brothers' favorite buddy. They build a doghouse for him so he didn't have to endure the cold.
