Poem Artwork

Do not be misled by what you see around you, or be influenced by what you see. You live in a world which is a playground of illusion, full of false paths, false values and false ideals. But you are not part of that world.
Sai Baba

......................................................................................................................

I set off on my evening walk through the city suburbs

swallows and swifts are racing across the evening summer skyline

and the streets are noisy and vocal, with groups of clamouring and energetic children

keeping my spirit young with their perpetual zest and enthusiasm

neighbouring gardens overflowing with lush fuschias , potentilla and lilacs on full display

climbing pink roses bejewelled on wooden lattice trellises

as I sought that calmness at the core, that is necessary for clear thinking

and enables you to seperate the illusion from the crystal clear truth

there are those that seek to hoodwink and beguile you in life

but I laugh at them with a smile, I've been around the block a few times

you can try, but you will never knock me out of my stride

I've hard to kick, punch, claw and scrape to get where I am in life

and to those who want to play the tough game around here

I remind them, I have been playing hard ball since I learnt to crawl

around the corner, I reach the seamier part of downtown

where you need all your wits about you, if you want to make it home

full of cut throats, hoods, junkies, pimps and illegals

you name it, there is a festering pit of vipers there

I arc back home in full circle, daily walking keeps me fit and supple

avoiding all the bar rooms, smoking and drinking has never been my game

pacing myself with precision, one foot after the other is the perfect way

and as I reach my front gate, I sense my system has been fully recharged

and deep within myself I hear that wisdom, always trust in your Sovereign God

Peter,

I feel refreshed too. You walked me through every step of beauty, fear and strength of spirit to continue on - only to arrive at the end strong, not afraid and back home. Wow!

How empowering, to take this walk with you, Peter.............from the pink roses bejewelling the trellis [lovely!] .......... to the feeling of the strength of your truth and convictions...........to the treading down of the serpents and dragons ................and finally, to return to your front gate, armed, ready...and ever-secure!

A stellar compilation, Peter!!! God bless you!
my love & prayers, Rhonda

PS.Thank you for the photo of Glasgow - I have Scottish roots myself!

I choose my time to walk as an introspective time as well...more suburban than your city streets, but the laughter of children is most always in the air. I leave fear behind...perhaps I am too unassuming...trusting by nature. I think I look at all of life that way...always trusting and looking for the good in others and the best in life full circle. The rest is a dream within reach.
This is suxch a beautifully constructed poem...the cycles of life, the people within, and your circuituous route compared. Thank you for sharing your walk and a piece of who you are... please take care.

Love,
Taylor

Peter:

This one is soo good. There are so many well-descibed sceneries, and I like the strong faith that you have expressed in this poem.

Having grown up in Los Angeles, I understand all that you speak of here, quite well. A strong will and knowledge of all that is around you is generally your best defense. Being in good shape doesn't hurt either...having the ability to run to safety is a comfort to possess. There is a beauty in all of life, even in the chants of the "ladies" on the street corners, thinking of them always makes me grin and gently shake my head. From manicured gardens to the lions den, that about sums up my neighborhood as I was growing up. Excellent visuals with enough flexibility for the reader to apply them to their own memories.
Take care,
Sherry

Your words feel familiar to me. It cannot just be the block you've been around a few times, perhaps also other realms few have ever visited. There must have been strange, bizarre trips you've been on, that made little sense to you when you were on them, but much later allowed you to see matters in a different perspective, giving you a kind of bird's eye view while others continue to struggle and move in only two dimensions. Having been bestowed these privileges (which isn't always a pleasurable prerogative) the measure of responsability is relatively increased. Reading the poem you posted here, I have no doubt you are fully aware of this. Thank you for creating and sharing. Take care,

RAge

Quite a little trip, frought with danger, intrigue and braggadocio, except in this particular case it isn't empty threats, I believe you when you speak. Finally, at last, and thank goodness, you usher us to the front gate and hopefully offer us a spot of tea.
