Hank Williams  Cold, Cold Heart

..............................................................................................

You never could keep your promises

you broke each and every one

with a heart like ice

you cared for only yourself

I was a fool to cry over you

but even a fool

learns how to play the game

my Mom always told me

son, she ain't worth the bother

but I was young and starstruck,

imagination running wild

lovelorn is the word

with scales on my eyes

you twisted your words

and broke my heart in bits

while I hung on grimly

to every last vestige of hope

dreaming my life away,

wishing on a lucky star

when you are in love

you are blind to the truth

and the last one to know

what's going on

always is yourself

but I held on with courage

to my self respect

and God sent me an Angel

who resigned you to Hell

"Cold Cold Heart"
A profound sharing, another Peter great.
Love in the heart conquers all regardless of
how painful. Wonderful poem!

Thank you,
Gwendolyn

Yep...kinda hard to "..melt a cold, cold heart." So many home-spun truths sung by ol' Hank W...as thereis in this poetry of yours. Enjoyed...

Very well done. "...when you are in love you are blind to the truth"
So very true. So true, indeed.

"when you are in love
you are blind to the truth
and the last one to know
what's going on"

This is so bloody true that it makes my teeth hurt Sir Peter.

Indeed, like a cathartic, this write, in its cut to the chase emotion that was invoked in you. Kudos!

Often our innocence is trampled upon by those who care for naught save themselves. I have numerous memories of equal fervor my dear and blessed friend.

In fraternity and poetic vision ...

The important part of this message IMO is that one must keep their hearts open..........sooner of later the right one comes our way...and the wrong one steps back into the shadows :-) Great write.

Wow Peter, this speaks for many I am positive, - in eloquent but concise terms you have certainly spoken about a couple of major episodes in my life with this one! Bravo Warrior! Love Panda :)

BTW I really love that graphic - just captures the theme very well and well...I just really like it. :)

You acutely articulate the harrowing and hard-wrung feelings of many, I am sure, Peter, and bring comfort that we are not the only "love's fool" on the planet!! :)) Strength and perceptivity all the way through, but the power in the final two lines is right between the eyes! An overcoming and empowering write that gives us all hope. LOL K xx

I can relate to this, wrote a poem on my memory though mine is too complicated. The simplicity of your poem makes it very effective. Great work. Victor

Dearest Peter
Love, life, hugs and care to you!!
Why is it that we are the last ones to know when we allow ourselves to be blinded by love...?
Your true Angel would never be assigned to the helly realms; for she'd be a reflection of you!!
Powerful stuff!
Love and Blessings Suzie :-D

My goodness, Peter! Such a bitter memoir..

It's a good thing you were young and awestruck, and have had plenty of time to recover!

A hurt like that shatters one's heart...and crushes the spirit.

I trust that wound has been all healed up...but it sure delivered some powerful writing, even now!

Love&blessings, Rhonda

Painful romance is genderless, and we all seem to go through it a few times before we find the right one, and for some they never find them. That's why those who have found it should do all in their power to keep it, for it is a gift not everyone gets! Excellent poem Peter.

I know the black heart. I've had them pass my paths twice but never again. I would wish you better Peter.
Your heart pain is here but so is your lesson.

There is always one we fall for who never appreciates us and in the end breaks our heart in the worst of ways. It is impossible to see at the time, but that relationship was doomed from the start and never meant to be. In the end, you got your prize for believing in yourself enough to love again. When you fell from your steed, you got up, dusted yourself off, put your sword back in its sheath (so to speak) *grin* and rode off to find the damsel of your dreams...the story just doesn't get any better than that, Peter.

Take care,

Sherry
