Having recently encountered more literary elitism, I've decided to re-post this tongue in cheek riposte.

Poem Artwork

Writers Block

In a stream my consciousness is afloat

like Noah’s gopher wood boat.

An ark of thought, a covenant,

fitted with an outboard motor,

speeding across an ocean of ideas

in a white overcoat.

Across the ocean there lies a land

where the beaches are terribly bland

and phonemes, dwell beneath the sand.

Where fact and fiction are swept up

by the tides of taste and lain upon a shore,

desolate, except for a cultural gate.

Guarded by a sycophantic cat

that sits on an intransigent mat.

Slavishly deciding what is ‘culture’

and who it should let in.

Determining what is rubbish

destined for the bin.

Beyond the cultural gate in the realm of

the ‘canon of stolen truths.’

A miasma blurs the dwellings,

golden towers with ivory roofs.’

Inhabited by odious beasts

that thrive on cultural snobbery.

Profane creatures, renowned for

their linguistic robbery.

Oppressing realistic voices

in favour of elitist choices.

As my boat draws near

the motor looses a gear.

Tendrils of fear now grip the ark’

floating aimlessly, adrift in the dark.

Heading toward the canonical reef,

A rocky barrier where many

a-genre-bending-poet

has come to grief.

I release the birds

that carry the words - but to no avail.

My mission is doomed to fail

smashed against the rocks, and sunk.

To be washed up on a desolate shore

Like flotsam – just a pile of junk.

I LOVE THIS!!! Sounds just like the bastion of the established English poetry scene thus far... and like the on-going struggle I have on my MA course - but then, just for this year, I have to be a "good girl" and try to play it their way!! ... Since I don't know nuffink anyways... Have had five poems returned from one such literary magazine just this morning with a "nice, but not quite and please do try us again"-note attached... funnily enough, what came closest in their estimation were the two most flip I submitted: "Not Your Cinderella" and "Stirrer" ("Spoon" rewritten)... YES I DID send them "NYC" - provocative aren't I??!... but they seemed to quite like it! Sorry, this is knee-jerk Kate on the yap, but needless to say I like your pile of dog's-doo here! So true and wise and... ...sadly, sad. But poets don't quit. Great stuff, Paul. Thank you. Love and peace. Regis

Elitists: Egomaniacs who should learn their place.
Elitists: They're not poets. They just play them badly.
Oooh, let's play pool. Elitists can be the balls. Oh, no. That won't work. They're not cool enough for pool. Okay. Billiards.

Did I say I liked your poem, Paul? ~~Nordette

The Writer's Graveyard - where we shall all probably end up some day - but it's probably a much better place than those towers filled with those odious beasts!

Great poem, Paul, so true! So sadly true that the best poets on God's green earth should be rejected by the "establishment".
